As they pushed on, she wondered why it was so important for her not to fail in Fionn’s eyes. But soon, her thoughts faded. She forgot all about her struggling design business and her financial obligations as she attempted to keep his pace. Life seemed so simple in the forest. It was mostly silent and the damp floor of fallen logs and thick moss permeated all of her senses.

Olivia noticed a small fox hidden in the underbrush and stopped to watch the shy animal for a brief moment before moving on.

At the summit, Fionn found a large rock overhang in the direct sunlight and set out a lunch for them.

Her voice hesitant, she asked him, “Why did you bring me here?”

Fionn watched her guardedly. “I know the transition is tough for you. Getting out in nature is one way to help you find your grounding before you have to put yourself out there socially.”

“What do you expect to happen?”

“In the end, we are not really your family. Isn’t that why you had a falling out with Oliver? It was about assets and money?” Olivia surprised herself by asking the question that was lingering in the background.

She could see the repressed anger in every line of his body. “No, It wasn’t about money.”

“Then tell me,” she said quietly.

Olivia could sense the vulnerability in him; she could see the memories chasing across his expression.

She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “There is so much that I don’t understand about the family. How did you meet Oliver?”

Without emotion, Fionn simply said, “I first met Oliver in Ireland when I was fourteen years old. The headmaster had called in an old favor and asked Oliver for his help with a young math student with no discipline. My father had just taken his own life, and even though I had scored in the top range and been accepted at an elite school for mathematics, I had no interest in attending.”

Olivia felt sadness for his early life. It must have been dreadful. Somehow it explained a lot about him. He seemed so strong, and not fearful of getting lost in grief or emotion.

“Oliver took me under his wing and made sure that I completed my education. When I became a
